History of Edinburgh

Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since 1437. The Scots also affectionately call this place “Auld Reekie” (Reekie meaning “Smoky”), respecting the presence of wood and firewood, which deprives the dark of the smoke from the smoke of the Edinburgh sky. The city consists of the medieval Old Town and the elegant New Town. Edinburgh Castle towers over the city, perched on top of volcanic rock. The castle houses the Royal Jewels of Scotland and the Stone of Scone (Stone of Destiny), on which the country's rulers were crowned. The top of Mount Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park offers stunning views of the city. There are several monuments and memorials erected on Calton Hill.
